I recently found a page on this John Brothers from the 1849 British Naval Biographical Dictionary that I was able to access through Ancestry.com.  Attached is part 1.

John was the uncle of Montezuma, the one who gave Montezuma his land grant in Canada.  Some sources have said that this John was a Lieutenant in the British Army, but as you will see he was actually a Lieutenant in the British NAVY.

I have that this John was first married to Ann Neeve and second to Harriet Storr.
